“If China is not going to solve North Korea, we will,” Trump told the newspaper. “That is what I am telling you.”
This can mean one of two things in my mind,
1- President Trump was actually serious when he said this and is betraying a really deep misunderstanding of China’s role in the problem/solution. Maybe, that the US can shift it’s relationship with North Korea (financially) and take over China’s role as the “good guy” in their eyes? Maybe something altogether worse.
2- Trump is pulling an old ploy from the USSR playbook and using belligerence in advance of his meeting with President Xi Jinping.
Neither is going to work. North Korea is probably not going to trust it and China is not intimidated by it. I imagine we’ll be back to the drawing board soon.
